In the construction of a full nasal prosthesis we prefer to consult with the patient before surgery to study the general shape of the natural nose.
If the nose has already been removed we would ask the patient to supply us with recent photographs that show the nose clearly.
After relevant consultations the first step in construction would be to take impressions of the defect area and to cast working models of the nasal area.
With the patient in attendance a nasal prosthesis is carved in wax, The waxed prosthesis is tried on the patient and corrections are made till all functional and aesthetical criteria are met.
The nasal prosthesis is finished off and placed onto the patient.
Prostheses are retained by medical adhesive fixation (stick on) or by placing osseointegrated implants to which the prosthesis can be attached by using a clip system.
The placement of titanium implant fixtures and abutment placement can be done as one surgical operation or placed in two different operations. The time allowed for osseointegration of the implants into the bone will be determined by the surgeon but a period of approximately 3 months is ussually accepted.
We do assist with the ordering of the implants to be placed and by constructing a surgical stent we can also assist in planning the location of the implant sites. If it pleases the patient and the surgeon we can be present in the operating theatre and at all relevant comnsultations.
